Being entrusted to care for a person that has died, to help and support their family at such a difficult time, and to arrange a truly unique and personal funeral is a true honour, and something that we never take lightly.

Our team
Bartholomew’s is a family run business. Today it is led by James Bartholomew, who is the fifth generation of the family to run the business.
And whilst not everyone who works for us is a Bartholomew by name, we are very much a family who work closely together as a team.
Every single member of the Bartholomew’s team plays their part to ensure that every family receives the very best care and service.

Our history
Bartholomew & Sons was founded in 1891 by Alfred Bartholomew when he took over the deeds of a joiners and wheelwright firm in Whiston. This led to the construction of coffins and the natural progression to offering funeral services in the Rotherham area.
James Willliam Bartholomew continued the hard work after his father and before his sons, Dennis and Philip guided the company through a period of expansion which saw the business move to Maltby in 1960.
Further expansion in 1978 led to the business opening on Broom Valley Road in Rotherham.
Dennis Bartholomew was honoured by Her Majesty the Queen in the 1997 MBE honours list in recognition of his services to the community of Whiston – the business’s original birth place.
In 1983, Dennis’ son Tony, took over the running of the business and during this time expanded the business to serve families all across Rotherham.
Tony retired in 2008, handing over to his son James who has continued to drive the business forward, and adapting to the changing requirements of families, who now wish to personalise funeral services more than ever before.

James Bartholomew
James is a fifth-generation funeral director to lead Bartholomew & Sons. As a custodian of his family business, he is committed to ensuring Bartholomew’s delivers the highest quality of service to clients. He also works hard to ensure the business continually adapts to meet the changing needs of families, whilst honouring the heritage, reputation and values of Bartholomew’s.
John Hague
John has been serving families in Rotherham with compassionate funeral directing services since 2004. At Bartholomew & Sons, John provides compassionate support and guidance to families during difficult times.
Matt Mulcahy
With 15 years of experience, Matt provides compassionate funeral directing services at Bartholomew & Sons, guiding and supporting families to create meaningful and personalised tributes for their loved ones.
Sam Smith
At Bartholomew & Sons, Sam guides families through every step of arranging a fitting tribute for their loved ones. With over 13 years of experience, Sam provides compassionate support and guidance to local families.
Rachael Beighton
At Bartholomew & Sons, Rachael handles administration, accounting, marketing, and supports funeral directors, ensuring every detail is handled with care and respect.
Amanda Meredith
At Bartholomew & Sons, Amanda is often the first friendly face you’ll encounter. She provides compassionate support and assists with initial inquiries, ensuring your needs are met with empathy and professionalism.
Steve Edwards
With 15 years of experience, Steve provides compassionate support to families at Bartholomew & Sons, from care and preparation of the deceased to driving and pallbearing.
Our funeral homes
We have funeral homes in Rotherham and Maltby and we serve all the local communities of Wingfield, Parkgate, Aldwake, Thrybergh, Dalton, Dalton Magna, Kimberworth, Templeborough, Brinsworth, Herringthorpe, Broom, East Herringthorpe and Flanderwell.
